Sole Stories is a tribute to the power and beauty of female tap dancers… and an invitation to the dance. Sole Stories pays tribute to tap dancing’s cultural roots and gives voice to the lost stories of female tap artists, both historical and present day.
Sciarra’s passion and advocacy for tap, combined with my love of writing, led to the creation of Sole Stories, a celebration of female tap dancers. The creation of Sole Stories was a natural progression after the founding of Taps Are Talking, Inc., a non-profit organization which upholds the art of tap as an educational and cultural force in the field of dance.
Celebrating America’s indigenous art of tap dancing, Sole Stories honors the contributions of female tap dancers, believing their stories will add a special and important element to the history of tap. Their stories are compelling testimonials to the commitment, desires, challenges, invisibility, and deep perseverance that women lived and experienced as tap dancers.
Sciarra continues to be inspired by tap dancing’s seminal female artists – they exhibited incredible courage and fierce determination to have tap be at the center of their lives. Sciarra believes today’s tappers stand on the shoulders of these powerful female artists. They are our legacy to a tomorrow that will continue to embrace many individual, extraordinary and soulful rhythms.
